Interview with vanessa jackson
Author of Doasma Diary 101
Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?
I am originally from South Philadelphia, I currently reside in Delaware County Pennsylvania.
If you currently reside somewhere besides where you were born, what’s the story that lead from there to here?
I was born and raised in the hood of South Philadelphia. I wanted a better life for myself so I became a homeowner at 21, the first home I purchased was in Sharon Hill Pennsylvania.
What made you decide to write and publish your first book?
My first book, “Diary of a Singler Mother,” which has been revised to “Sheep in the Midst of wolves.” was inspired after I successfully overcame many hardships in life. When I received a bachelor’s degree at 40 years old, I was compelled to share my testimonies with the world.
How would you describe your books to first time readers?
I would describe the book as a motivational and inspirational read. The last chapters of the book are written on a non-conformist stance, sharing personal ideologies with the world. The books is written as a diary, it’s nontraditional writing.
“Dosma’s Diary 101” — is the 4th book I have written, it is designed to help children and young adults become mindful of their actions and behaviors of and towards others.
Who do you feel is most likely to connect with the topics you write about?
Anyone who is looking to be motivated, and/or inspired.
What unexpected or surprising thing did you learn during the process of writing and publishing?
As I completed the books, I thought about repressed memories, and it has made me realize why I became who I am today.
If you could, what advice would you give to your past self before embarking on this journey?
You are enough and don’t look for others to define your worth.
How many people would you ideally like to reach with your books?
As many people as possible, especially individuals who need uplifting guidance.
What has been the biggest challenge and frustration during the process to date?
It has been an honor to put my thinking into words, it has truly been a pleasure writing, it’s a passion. Every book I publish I see as a success. My words are out there and will be available for many years after I perish. My footprint is imprinted. Indeed, I made myself vulnerable, but thankfully I’m not ashamed of past mistakes, Indeed, we all have done things we aren’t proud of. But to overcome and rise above our previous selves is where the power is revealed.
What’s your biggest strengths when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
My biggest strengths are speaking my truth–yet seeing life openmindedly.
What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
My biggest weakness is marketing, I don’t put much time in marketing. When I finish one book, I work on another. I only market through social media at this time, one day I would like to do more.
When do you think you will write your next book?
I just completed a book, “Mumford 88” I am so proud of this short story, its power, and hope. I am currently working on two additional books. Writing is my life.
Are you self published or did you use a hybrid publisher, or a traditional publisher?
My first two books went through Outskirts Press. Today I publish independently via Amazon.
