Interview with Laura T Johnson

Author of Unbalanced 3: Torn

 

Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?

I’m from the South Memphis, TN. It is my hometown and where I still reside.

What made you decide to write and publish your first book?

I decided to write my first book because I wanted to share my story of being in an abusive relationship. Where Would I be was not only my first novel, it was my journal. I wanted survivors to know that there is life after abuse.

How would you describe your books to first time readers?

I would describe them as a truthful look inside an abusive relationship. Domestic violence, even in this day and age, is still considered taboo. My books, for lack of a better phrase, is an in your face look into domestic violence.

Who do you feel is most likely to connect with the topics you write about?

Women between the ages of 28-55. Women who are survivors of abuse or knows someone who is.

What unexpected or surprising thing did you learn during the process of writing and publishing?

Oh, my God, I’ve learned so much during both processes. My most favorite is the editing process. The drill of doing rewrites to clean up a manuscript has always fascinated me. I love to read the opinions of my editor on how a scene can be made better. As for the publishing process, I think I’m pretty much like every other author. I like the final click of the publish button.

If you could, what advice would you give to your past self before embarking on this journey?

Trust your gut. And know that your writing is great enough. A small speech I still give to myself.

How many people would you ideally like to reach with your books?

Now, I’ve never thought about that. I would love to say everyone, but I know that’s not possible. I think I would like to reach the readers that need to read my story. That likes a great story that keeps their attention.

What has been the biggest challenge and frustration during the process to date?

Marketing has been the biggest challenge to date. I am still trying to master the basics in this area.

What’s your biggest strengths when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?

My biggest strength is writing. To be able to create worlds that readers can relate to has always been easy for me.

What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?

Once again marketing is my weakest point. I am absolutely terrible at marketing. But I am determined to get better.

When do you think you will write your next book?

I am in the process of writing my next book. Actually, I’m in the process of writing my next three books.

Are you self published or did you use a hybrid publisher, or a traditional publisher?

I am self published.
