Interview with Valencia Payne
Author of Fluid and Electrolytes for Nursing Students
Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?
I am from the USA and currently reside in Texas.
What made you decide to write and publish your first book?
I taught at Chamberlain College of Nursing in Arlington, VA and it occurred to me that nursing students were not connecting the dots with medical information taught to them and applying the information to the test. I realized that I needed to streamline the information and focus on what the nurse needed to know in order to apply it in their nursing practice.
How would you describe your books to first time readers?
My textbooks are informative, streamlined, colorful and artistic. It makes it easy for nursing students to grasp and retain the information.
Who do you feel is most likely to connect with the topics you write about?
Nursing students as well as other healthcare professionals such as MDs, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, LPNs, and CNAs.
What unexpected or surprising thing did you learn during the process of writing and publishing?
How easily I could formulated the information based on my experience as a bedside nurse.
If you could, what advice would you give to past self yourself before embarking on this journey?
Not to get writers block when writing your first book.
How many people would you ideally like to reach with your books?
As many people that hear about the textbooks via social media or email.
What has been the biggest challenge and frustration during the process to date?
Time to finish each textbook and the editing process for each book. This is always lengthy and challenging.
What’s your biggest strengths when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
Writing: I know the information because I am a Registered Nurse
Publishing: Its easy formulate the textbook, create an artistic book cover, and utilize a top performing platform such as Amazon.
Marketing: Social Media and Email
What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
Writing: Writers block when getting started
Publishing: None
Marketing: None
When do you think you will you write your next book?
Book Six will probably be publish sometime in 2020.
Are you self published or did you use a hybrid publisher, or a traditional publisher?
I am self-published.
