Interview with Rachel Adcock
Author of Pain with Purpose
Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?
I was born in Texas, but I grew up in Virginia primarily and still live there, just outside of Richmond.
If you currently reside somewhere besides where you were born, what’s the story that lead from there to here?
My parents moved to Virginia when I was in 3rd grade to be closer to my mom’s family at the time.
What made you decide to write and publish your first book?
I have had several life changing circumstances that have led me to believe that things happen for a purpose, even the bad things. I want to help young women by sharing what I wish I had learned when I was their age.
How would you describe your books to first time readers?
I think it may trigger emotions for some people who have been through similar situations, but I think most will connect with it and hopefully find it enjoyable. I have tried to add some humor to what is mostly a serious topic.
Who do you feel is most likely to connect with the topics you write about?
I believe the readers that will connect most with my book are those that have had a troubled marriage and those that are mothers.
What unexpected or surprising thing did you learn during the process of writing and publishing?
I think the most surprising thing to me was how hard it would be to write some of the chapters and how much of it I would end up changing.
If you could, what advice would you give to your past self before embarking on this journey?
My biggest advice would be to get input from a lot of people because even though it makes sense and is interesting to you, it may not be to everybody else. I ended up doing this but wish I had done it sooner.
How many people would you ideally like to reach with your books?
My goal is to connect with as many young women as possible.
What has been the biggest challenge and frustration during the process to date?
My biggest challenge was honestly with formatting. I luckily had some contacts who could help me with it.
What’s your biggest strengths when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
I think my biggest strength is organization and determination to get to the finish line.
What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
I am honestly not much of a writer, or a reader, so adding enough detail was my biggest weakness. I had to keep going back to add more.
When do you think you will write your next book?
I am not sure if there will be a next one, but it will at least be a few years!
Are you self published or did you use a hybrid publisher, or a traditional publisher?
I utilized Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing to publish my book.
