Eight Ways to Boost Your Self-Esteem

Undeniably, our own self-esteem may not be as high as we want it to be. We often feel insecure, as a result, and this can damage our performance—whether at work or in school—or perhaps our interaction with others. Dealing with low self-esteem can be difficult, but it is not without solutions.



We’re often finding ways to building self-esteem—and that’s a good thing! We should always be up to develop ourselves, especially when we have so much to live for. When such is the case, we can make ourselves better, and we can live life as happily as it should be.

While we may have trouble getting rid of low self-esteem, there are fortunately dynamic ways out there for you to do so. Here are some ways to improve your self-esteem.

  1. Speak encouraging words to yourself

You need to tell yourself you can be everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Remind yourself every day, and don’t be ashamed to encourage yourself by telling yourself aloud that you can mold yourself into the best person you can be. Practice accordingly, and you’ll get there soon enough to boost your self-esteem.

  1. Stop criticizing yourself and comparing yourself to others

We’re often tempted to say derogatory things about ourselves, especially when we make mistakes. Oftentimes, we also tend to compare ourselves with others. Don’t dive into the temptation of being your own critic. What you need to focus on is making something of yourself, and work on the things you need to improve on.

It’s natural for people to make mistakes. It’s also common among the average folk to feel discouraged when they don’t meet expectations they set for themselves, which leads to lack of self-esteem. That’s why you should always make sure to set goals and expectations you can actually meet, so you won’t have any problems in fulfilling them.

  1. Know yourself

We also need to know our strengths, weaknesses, and our propensity to grow whenever we develop our self-esteem. You can go ahead and find yourself by taking it easy every once in a while. Go on trips, meditate, and contemplate on the good things life has to offer. Think about how well you’re handling things, as well as those you need to improve on.

  1. Surround yourself with positive people

More often than not, there are just people who bring you down. You don’t need to mingle with them. You could go as far as to say that you don’t really need them. You just need to surround yourself with people who’d support you every step of the way—people who will make you better as a person. Improving self-esteem also involves people around you.

  1. Stop aiming for perfection

Perfection is a relative concept, and whenever we set our minds upon it, it often becomes impossible to achieve. Stop fussing over the idea of being perfect and accept that you have flaws that you can improve on. Or perhaps you need to accept that there are just some things that are just impossible to change. Always remember to embrace yourself as a person.

  1. Learn to be more assertive

While there are people who find solace in silence, it also helps to learn to assert more in the everyday dealings of life. Don’t be a pushover! You should learn to stand for yourself, as the biggest help you can get is from yourself.  It’s a great way to increase self-esteem.

  1. Finish something you’ve halted doing for so long

Maybe you’ve experienced discouragement in the activity you were once engaged in, such as writing, going to the gym, hiking, or whatever. Learning to pick yourself back up and doing what you’ve put off for quite some time can help you become more positive and more accomplished.

Once you learn to put yourself first before anything else, you can learn to be more positive in the future.
